Dota 2 is an action-based real-time strategy (or ARTS) game published and developed by Valve Corporation. It is the direct successor of the original Defense of the Ancients (or DotA) mod for Warcraft III, with the main developer at the turn of the 2010s (IceFrog) having been brought on to Valve to create a sequel. The game was known to have been functional as early as December 2010, and debuted in a closed beta with the inaugural edition of The International at Gamescom 2011. The closed beta lasted through the rest of 2011, through 2012 and half of 2013, when the game came out of beta in July 2013. It was later ported to the Source 2 engine in September 2015.

The game's in-game digital item economy as well as its large esports scene has resulted in the creation of numerous other sites and other assets related to the game, these include Dota 2 Lounge, joinDOTA, Beyond the Summit, and similar.

Vital signs

Stable, it is arguably one of Valve's main cash cows, aside from the Steam platform itself.

The game has an official development forum and discussion board, "Dota2 Dev". It was used quite heavily in the early part of the game's history, but with the rise of other platforms such as reddit (including the Dota 2 subreddit), activity from both users as well as Valve alike has dwindled in recent years. It would not be unwise to keep an eye on the forums as a similar pattern followed before the sudden demise of the Steam Users' Forums in May 2017.

In response to an overwhelming amount of support on the Dota 2 subreddit to bug-basher Jeff Hill, an experimental GitHub bug tracker was created in June 2022 to manage the influx of quality bug reports. This has cast some doubts about the long-term future of the developer forums that remain unanswered. More recently, Jeff has stated that "GitHub is simply better than the old dev forums in every way" and that the forums "had a problem where it was hard to know what was important and what wasn't - especially if you're a dev who's not a very strong Dota player", with the caveat that "we're learning how to make it work right now".[1]

The forums were pulled offline in August 2022 in favor of said tracker which was made official and moved under the ValveSoftware organization.
