Gitorious was a source code hosting service founded in 2008. As of 2015, it hosted over 100000 repositories. In March 2015, Gitorious was acquired by GitLab and was going to be closed, but they let Archive Team take a copy, which has been rehosted since then.

GitLab acquires Gitorious to bolster its on premises [sic] code collaboration platform

Sytse Sijbrandij Mar 3rd, 2015

As reported by the Next Web GitLab and Gitorious announce today they are joining forces in an effort to strengthen the development of GitLab’s open source Git management application and provide Gitorious customers with an enhanced user experience.

“We believe that, in the long term, coming together under one umbrella with a common goal will benefit everyone, so we are getting that process started today” says GitLab CEO, Sytse Sijbrandij.

Rolf Bjaanes, Gitorious CEO, gives some background on the reasons for the acquisition: “At Gitorious we saw more and more organizations adopting GitLab. Due to decreased income from on-premises customers, running the free Gitorious.org was no longer sustainable. GitLab was solving the same problem that we were, but was solving it better.”

“This acquisition will accelerate the growth of GitLab. With more than 100,000 organizations using it, it is already the most used on-premise solution for Git repository management, and bringing Gitorious into the fold will significantly increase that footprint.” says Sytse Sijbrandij, GitLab CEO.

Starting today, Gitorious.org users can import their existing projects into GitLab.com by clicking the “Import projects from Gitorious.org” link when creating a new project. Gitorious.org will stay online until the end of May 2015 to give people time to migrate their repositories. Existing users of Gitorious on-premises can contact sales@gitlab.com for more information.

Archives

Rolf Bjaanes dropped by in IRC and discussed creating archives such as exporting data into Internet Archive. You can read the logs for 2015-03-03.

I'm Rolf Bjaanes, CEO of Gitorious, and you are receiving this email because you have a user on gitorious.org.

As you may know, Gitorious was acquired by GitLab about a month ago, and we announced that Gitorious.org would be shutting down at the end of May, 2015.

After the announcement we talked to the Archive Team about how to preserve Gitorious.org and its data for the future. A member of the Archive Team graciously offered to host gitorious.org as a read-only archive on Gitorious.org and GitLab agreed to allow to use the Gitorious.org domain name for this.

This is a huge benefit to anyone depending on gitorious.org as repositories will remain available at the same location. Cloning and fetching will continue to work as well. Projects you may depend on will stay around even if it isn't moved to GitLab.

In order to build the archive we need to make Gitorious.org read-only prior to the shutdown date. This ensures that no new data is coming in while we are migrating. Pushing changes and creating new repositories will therefore stop working from the 15th of May, 2015.[2][3]

user:chronomex, in cooperation with GitLab and ex-Gitorious staff, obtained a copy of all the public data (source code and wikis) of Gitorious, and has rehosted it (as read-only) on the same domain gitorious.org. See details there.
