Plate from Transactions of the Entomological Society, 1848.

Entomology is the scientific study of insects. At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, some dating back around 400 million years. They have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth.

Projects

  • AntWeb: leading online database on ants, storing specimens images and records, documenting over 490,000 specimens across over 35,000 taxa.
  • BugGuide: as of October 2014, it had 30,774 species pages and over 808,718 images.
  • eButterfly: online database of butterfly observations.
  • The Global Lepidoptera Names Index: database maintained by the Department of Entomology at the Natural History Museum, London.
