What is going to happen to my old account?

The short answer:

Your old photos and blog posts are safe. They will be available for download in a couple of months. Other things (skins, quizzes, wall posts, games etc…) unfortunately will all be retired. Leave your email address below to be notified when you can download your old Bebo photos and blog posts:

The long answer:

Unfortunately, the Bebo we sold in 2008 was not the same Bebo we bought back in 2013.

The business had 0 full-time employees, was losing money, and basic functionality such as creating new accounts and uploading photos was broken.

We didn’t mind that the old site was a bit messy, because our plan is to start fresh and build a new Bebo.

However, as Bebo users, we knew it was top priority to ensure that all photos and blog posts were safe before building a new Bebo.

It will take a bit of engineering, but in a few months we will have your photos and blog posts available for download. Please leave your email address above to be notified when the photos are ready for downloading.

What is the new Bebo going to be?

Before we talk about the future of Bebo, allow us to reflect for a moment.

From 2005-2008, Bebo was one of the most exciting tech companies in the world. It was growing rapidly to over 40 Million members, and in countries like Ireland, Bebo was more popular than Google.

But even a great company needs investment, creativity, and innovation if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. Bebo didn’t have that over the past five years… so rather than immediately jumping in and creating new features, we went back to the basics:

What is Bebo all about? What was it then, what is it now, and what could it be in the future?

Bebo’s personality was fun. weird. creative. Anyone who was on Bebo understood that, and rocked it. Unfortunately, it lost its mojo as it grew, and the company changed ownership.

For us, Bebo is our baby. Years have passed, and things have changed - so Bebo will grow and evolve with the times.

Rest assured, no matter what changes we make, Bebo will always be a place where you can be yourself, have fun, and connect with friends.

So, in summary… we’re not saying what the new Bebo is yet :)

Funny video. What the heck is Bebo anyways?

Bebo was a popular social network founded by Michael and Xochi Birch back in 2005. The platform celebrated its people, their friends, and creativity.

Here’s a short history on the company:

  • 2005 - Bebo, an early social network was founded by husband-and-wife team Michael and Xochi Birch in January 2005 at their home in San Francisco.
  • 2005 (9 days after launching) - Bebo hits 1 Million Users.
  • 2005 - After numerous questions about why the name is Bebo, Michael makes up an answer (Blog Early Blog Often). Real answer? Bebo was short, snappy, and utterly nonsensical.
  • 2006 & 2007 - We built Bebo mobile, groups and the infamous whiteboard amongst other features.
  • 2008 - Sold to AOL.
  • 2010 - Sold to Criterion Capital.
  • Today - Bought back by the original Founders.
  • Tomorrow - We start re-inventing Bebo.

How can I retrieve my data?

We bought Bebo back because we have plans to build a new, fresh Bebo. However while we are excited about the future, we knew how important it was to make sure your old photos and blog posts were preserved.

You’re probably feeling sentimental now, thinking back to the good old days. In order for us to make it easy for you to get access to your old photos and blog posts, enter your email address at the bottom of this page, and we’ll let you know as soon as your files are ready for download.

When will the new Bebo be ready?

While we can’t share the exact time frame, we can promise that if you provide your email below, you will be the first to get to try the new Bebo.

Why are some pages and profiles still visible?

We’re just as sentimental as you are (ok, probably more), and have left all public profiles visible for now. Private profiles are also saved, but not visible at the moment.

If you have any questions you can email the team at bebo@monkeyinferno.com.

Can I give some input to the new site?

Of course! While it’s time for Bebo to grow up we know that you’ve got ideas and we want to hear them. Email the team at bebo@monkeyinferno.com.

Can I get in touch with the team building Bebo?

We would love to hear from you. Bebo is being built in the heart of San Francisco by The Monkey Inferno. Feel free to email us at bebo@monkeyinferno.com.
