I thought that Wikipedia started using 7z/lzma instead of bz2? The files were much smaller. That could help in spreading the backups. -Pronoiac 02:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- The current revision of en-wiki saves 15% at its default compression level. I'd thought the difference was much more pronounced. I retract this suggestion - the canonical bz2 files are fine. -Pronoiac 05:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Please have an eye on “Articles For Deletion”.
We might consider automating saving endangered Wikipedia articles + their discussion (talk) pages + entire revision history of both.
(For Germany, there is someting called PlusPedia, which tries to rescue Wikipedia pages But I guess it only contains the most recent revision, without edit history or talkpages.)
