I thought that Wikipedia started using 7z/lzma instead of bz2? The files were much smaller. That could help in spreading the backups. -Pronoiac 02:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

The current revision of en-wiki saves 15% at its default compression level. I'd thought the difference was much more pronounced. I retract this suggestion - the canonical bz2 files are fine. -Pronoiac 05:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

For English Wikipedia, the bz2 is about ~280 GB, the 7zip one is ~31 GB, see. Emijrp 22:22, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Rescuing endangered Wikipedia articles.

Please have an eye on Articles For Deletion.
We might consider automating saving endangered Wikipedia articles + their discussion (talk) pages + entire revision history of both.

(For Germany, there is someting called PlusPedia, which tries to rescue Wikipedia pages But I guess it only contains the most recent revision, without edit history or talkpages.)
